The gargantuan Banyan Tree covers about 14,500 square meters of land (3.5 acres) in the Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Botanical Garden, Kolkata.


Don’t mistake this photograph to be a picturesque of a forest; it is a long shot of one single tree possessing of about 3600 prop roots. Yes, don’t be shocked- this tree has built its empire in this botanical garden being the centre of attraction of the whole garden.

This Banyan Tree is ruling in this dynasty for over 250 years now and no external force could cause much harm except for the two deadly cyclones in the past that forced the tree’s main 15.7-meter-wide (51-foot) trunk to be removed.


Can you imagine, the tree is still growing and we don’t know if it will need another neighboring state to lend hands? Walking around the tree for a visit is beyond impossible, for the ease of the viewers a 330 meter long road has been constructed around for a drive through.

It is recorded to be over 450 meter already.



The great Banyan Tree offers to be the main landmark of the Botanical Garden and is awarded to be largest tree in the world which brings about a heritage factor for the City of Joy.
